Waste Management

In 2006, the Board of Directors of ASA Potrero committed to create a plan to manage sewage treatment in our community. It soon became clear that retro-fitting a collection system and treatment plant was cost -prohibitive. However, it was learned that new technological developments in the treatment and recycling of waste water have made available scalable, ecologically friendly, cost-effective systems that are capable of turning black water into recyclable water that manufacturers claim is 95% pure.

Given the accelerating rate of development in our community, it is a concern that traditional septic systems will NOT be able to safely accommodate the waste from the increasing population density associated with the many multiple-unit projects planned or under construction. It is strongly urged that designs for all new construction include this new type of waste treatment system.

4 Primary Types of Pollution:

physical pollution

Represented by the excess of particles in suspension in water or MES. Those particles block access of light in the water, creating an imbalance in the trophic chain.

organic pollution

Comes from organic material discharged mainly from kitchen and sanitary water. These organic particles consume a large amount of oxygen from the water, the consequence of which is total destruction of the ecosystem. Organic pollution is evaluated :

-by the chemical demand of Oxygen (DCO)

-by the biochemical demand of oxygen (DBO5)

mineral pollution

Comes from the abundance of minerals composed of AZOTE and Phosphor contained in sewage water from cities. Similar to fertilizers used in agriculture, they generate a large amount of vegetable material and especially phytoplancton. The consequences are an important loss of biodiversity and massive fish mortality.

biological pollution

This includes all the pathogenic germs contained in water. Responsible for many illnesses, especially in underdeveloped countries

A traditional septic tank, like most of us have here is efficient to a maximum of 30 %. Why, because nature has not enough time do to the job. Or you need a tank 10 times bigger than what you have - at 10 times the expense!

Have you seen wastebaskets next to the toilet in restaurants or hotels in Costa Rica, containing toilet paper that you are asked not to throw in the toilet?

Recycling tanks work to a 98 % efficiency! No maintenance, no chemical additives, not expensive in comparison to the price of Nature!

How do they work? Just naturally, with the help of air!

The end product is clear, odorless water, not drinkable but which can be used for gardens, cleaning your car, or just returned to mother nature without damage.

Purifying and recycling waste water minimizes the risk of contaminating the groundwater. This technology has been in existence for more than 30 years and is used daily in other countries. Why not in Costa Rica? Should we set the example? Can we afford not to? We must do it now for the benefit of future generations, before it’s too late.
